Buying a mattress you have not lain on

The objection to buying a mattress online is that you cannot try it. The assumption underneath is that lying on one in a shop tells you whether it suits you. It does not, and understanding why makes the decision easier.

What a showroom actually tells you

Ten minutes, dressed, awake, on your back with someone waiting nearby, on a bed that has been lain on by two hundred people this month and is softer than the one that would arrive. What you learn is whether it feels pleasant immediately. That is not the same question as whether you will sleep well on it for years.

Immediate comfort and long term suitability are frequently different answers. A surface that feels luxurious for ten minutes can leave your lower back unsupported over seven hours. A surface that feels unremarkable at first is often the one you stop noticing, which is what a bed is for.

What actually tells you

Sleeping on it, in your own room, on your own base, with your own pillow and bedding, for long enough that your body stops reacting to the change. That takes weeks rather than nights. The first three nights on any new mattress tell you it is unfamiliar and nothing more.

Read the exclusions, not the headline

A long guarantee is only as good as what it covers. The detail worth finding is how settlement is defined, what depth of impression is treated as normal, whether the cover and the comfort layer are included or only the springs, and what is required of you to keep it valid.

How much to spend

A mattress is used for around eight hours a night, every night, for as long as it lasts. Divided across that, the numbers look different from the ticket price. What matters more than the figure is how long the thing stays the way it was when it arrived, because a bed that softens in four years is bought three times in the life of one that does not.

How it works here

A hundred nights to change your mind. Concierge unpacking to the room of your choice, unrolled onto your bed, packaging gone. Old mattress removal and recycling at the same moment. If the feel is not right, the comfort layer changes under Adjust to Desire rather than the mattress going back.
